Connecting Prisons with Nature

Can prisons save money and the environment while changing lives? The Sustainable Prisons Project brings ecological research, sustainable practices and green jobs training into local prisons. A partnership of the Washington State Department of Corrections and The Evergreen State College, the project's mission is to reduce the environmental, economic and human costs of incarceration. Forest ecologist Nalini Nadkarni began the program in 2008 supported by a unique network of scientists, inmates, prison staff, students, and community partners such as the Nature Conservancy and the Fort Lewis military base.
