There are reindeer in Texas! On April 3 we traveled to Houston for the opening of “Human Nature” at the Houston Center for Photography. The group exhibition raises questions about the current state of our relationship to the natural environment – are we living for success, or excess? Four prints from our reindeer series are featured in the show, along with work by Lucas Foglia, Mary Daniel Hobson, Pablo Lopez, Paula McCartney, Travis Roozee, Larry Schwarm, Jay Tyrrell, Lou Vest, Robert Voit, and high school students from HCP’s Collaborations VI Program. This exhibition runs through May 10, 2009.

Before we arrived we knew little of the thriving art and photography scene in Houston’s Museum District. But between HCP (a cousin of our local Photo Center Northwest), the FotoFest biennial, and fine art institutions such as the Museum of Fine Arts and the Menil Collection, there was a lot to absorb! We were thrilled by the turnout at the opening and grateful for the warm welcome we received from so many. Sara and I can’t wait to return.
Finally, we want to express our sympathies and send our thoughts to Madeline and the staff at HCP who lost one of their own, Leigh Boone, in a tragic accident days before the opening.
APRIL 30 UPDATE: Artforum has posted a Critics’ Pick review of the show.
