Blue Earth Alliance Award

Posted 23 September 2008 by in Announcements, Facing Climate Change

Benj and I are excited to announce that we were awarded a project grant for $3,000 at the fourth annual Blue Earth Alliance Lottery fundraiser last Thursday in Seattle. Over 160 people attended this unique event, which raised funds to support Blue Earth’s mission to promote documentary photography that increases public awareness of endangered cultures, threatened environments, and social concerns.

Some 60 guests participated in the lottery, and each won the opportunity to select a donated print (Our reindeer on a boat image was chosen during the first round for $1000!). In addition, images by Daniel Beltrá, Phil Borges, and Art Wolfe were sold in special live auctions.

As recipients of the award, we had the opportunity to share some of our new wildfire work for the first time:

Aside from this direct contribution, Blue Earth Alliance has helped us tremendously over the past couple of years. Their 501 (c)(3) sponsorship enables us to approach foundations we otherwise couldn’t, and receive tax-deductible donations from individuals. They’ve also supported us through exhibit opportunities such as a recent group-show at Seattle City Hall, our upcoming exhibit in Kent that will feature climate change work by several other Blue Earth photographers, and a presentation at the Henry Art Gallery early next year (date TBD).

One of the most valuable things at this moment in our careers, though, is simply to be a part of the Blue Earth community, which includes some of the best photographers in the world working on issues of social and environmental change. To be included in this group is an honor, but to have their mentorship, encouragement and support is invaluable to this project, and to our continued growth and long-term careers.

To Chase, who was a terrific MC, and to Larry, Adam, Nadine and the rest of Blue Earth’s tireless volunteer board and community at large: thank you and congratulations on the spectacular event!

Read good friend and fellow Blue Earth photographer Tim Matsui‘s post about the evening (or, how Chase Jarvis kept his pants on).

We are extremely grateful for this award, but our fundraising is far from done. Find out more about how you can help.

  1. Congratulations.

    Powerful photos and great storytelling.

  2. Sara and Benj,

    Great work!

As a USFS departmental neighbor to Fire (Trails is one of those whose budgets get frozen every August when Fire exceeds its allowance yet again), I appreciate your story and your continuing coverage of important climate issues of our times. Kudos. And come visit Darrington sometime. :)
